My first music festival as a photographer and I couldn't have asked for anywhere better than Punk Rock Holiday in Tolmin, Slovenia.
Tolmin forms part of the mountainous Soca Valley where, throughout the summer, many music and sports festivals are held. To find out more about all the activities and sights to see at Soca Valley, visit https://www.soca-valley.com/en/
Compared to the majority of festivals that take place in grassy fields, Punk Rock Holiday is based along the refreshing Soca river, where many festival goers float along on novelty inflatables or take a dip to cool off from the scorching hot temperatures of Tolmin.
What sets Punk Rock Holiday apart from many festivals isn't just the beautiful location that it's set in. It's a 5 day festival where bands play across 2 stages (The Beach Stage and Main Stage) but play one after another throughout day. There is no overlap so you will not miss a band you really want to see, unless you really need to sleep during the day. It's a long festival after all.
But more importantly, there is no barrier between the stages and audience, which also means no photography pit. Photographers may have a hard time dealing with mosh pits, stage divers and crowd surfers but with the experience I've had shooting in small club venues, it's sort of become second nature for me to shoot this way. Besides, it also lends opportunity to capture the real essence of Punk Rock Holiday, where bands and fans aren't separated from one another.
